This area focuses on how to understand, cultivate, and maintain the community of God. You’ll find ways to connect through community events, groups, and classes exploring a wide range of topics.

    Minnesota continues to have some of the worst racial disparities in the nation. Jim Crow of the North charts the progression of racist policies and practices in real estate from the advent of restrictive covenants after the turn of the last century, their elimination in the 1960s, through to the lasting impact on our cities today.     This book by Resmaa Menakem informs us about how past and current traumas impact society and changes DNA, impacting the “fight, flee, or freeze” responses. My Grandmother’s Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not only about the head, but about the body, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide. He provides several tools for healing our society (individually and collectively) from the sin of slavery. Purchase book on your own ahead of the discussion.

    September 26: Burnsville Police will be here to talk about safety for seniors in our community. They will discuss frequently reported issues, including identity theft, mail fraud, and internet & phone scams. You’ll have time to ask our local law enforcement about how you can stay safe and aware.

    October 3: Chuck Squires, retired VP in business development, avid volunteer, and adventurer will help us think about how to shape (or reshape) retirement. He is eager to share experiences and encourage us as to why being semi- retired or retired can be rewarding. We will talk about finding new possibilities for learning and giving back as we journey into the next season of life. Participants are welcome to ask questions, share their own stories, and add to our dialog.

    October 10: Dr. Ken Joslyn, MD, MPH, semi-retired physician with a 50+ year career in medicine, will join us for a conversation around screenings that pertain to seniors. In the age of prevention, we now have many options and many guidelines about what, when, and how to stay healthy through preventive screening tests--and it can be confusing. Dr. Joslyn will share best practices and evidence-based answers around screenings and tests.

    This course is a fun and easy way to help those with chronic illness deal with the stress, fatigue, frustration and pain that are common for people who live with chronic conditions. You will gain the self-confidence to manage your illness as you discover and believe in the possibility of abundant life through hope, strength, joy and anticipation for a future filled with promise. Marilyn Tubbs has been a lay minister at POP for over 40 years and has had Rheumatoid Arthritis all of her adult life. Pat Kasell has worked in health care for 35 years focusing on healthy education and behavior change. Register before September 15. Limited to 30 people.

But how can we do that in a way that empowers our immigrant neighbors rather than pushing them to the fringes of white-dominant culture?     This 2022 movie tells the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched in 1955 while visiting his cousins in Mississippi.     You’ll learn how the current tax system, Social Security rules, and other factors interact to either cost or save you money.     In 2006, eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik, an Indian Muslim from the Juhu slum of Mumbai, is a contestant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Before answering the final question, he is detained and tortured by the police, who suspect him of cheating. Through a series of flashbacks, Jamal recounts the incidents in his life that provided him with each answer. Join us for an optional discussion following the movie.
